Good Manners Essay
A good definition of manners would be to treat another person with respect, kindness, honesty and consideration.
They’re also necessary in order to display care for others’ feelings, show respect for another’s opinion, and so on. In other words, manners are necessary in order for humans to have healthy interaction with each other, both in social and professional situations. This article will discuss what those “manners” are, in addition to why good manners are important.
Manners come in many varieties, including: direct, indirect, formal, or express. For example, when you say “Thank you,” it’s direct; but if you mean it with a curt “Thank you very much” you’re not being polite.
But when you mean it with a smile, you’re having a positive, sincere expression of gratitude. That’s one of the most basic of all good manners.
It’s hard to point to any kind of “manners” in particular that work in all kinds of social settings. It’s just something nice to do when you can, in the same way that brushing your teeth is also kind of a nice thing to do when you can, as is eating vegetables.
We don’t expect people to behave in all manners all the time, even if we think they should, which is why etiquette is taught in schools. The reason we teach social etiquette in schools is to teach children the basics of behavior, so that if they act out badly, they at least know what they’re doing is not condoned by society.
So, how can good manners be taught in public settings?
Well-mannered people tend to be courteous to everyone they interact with, especially when the other person is a close friend or family member.
When you compliment someone, make sure you really do mean it. It can go the way of one-two-three, if you don’t. If you do, that’s fine, but saying it in a respectful manner every time means you’re actually trying to improve your social skills (which can translate to good manners in the real world).
One way to improve your manners is to be aware of what is and isn’t appropriate when you are eating in a public place. It is rude to take your food from a table that is not yours. You shouldn’t be rude and impatient while waiting for your food either.
If you don’t like what you are drinking or eat only what you bring yourself to, then don’t do it. It’s manners, not rocket science.
What about when you are talking to someone? Is it rude to talk with your mouth full? What if you forget to thank someone after making a comment?
What is considered rude during dinner in a public place, is something nicer to say when you’re talking to family members and friends? Especially if you can hear them saying things behind your back like…
Recently, a gentleman at work made a comment to me that was very rude and inappropriate. I listened to his entire speech, which was full of so many errors, before I stood and told him to leave.
I could tell from the tone of his voice and body language, he wanted to leave. I asked him to please speak another time when we were in a more polite mood.
What kind of a message does it send when you keep your head down while someone is giving a speech? I didn’t realize that he probably hadn’t been in the military and wasn’t reflecting the truth in his speech, but that is the problem with our society and our upbringing.
Manners are important. They help us feel more comfortable in and out of situations, which is important.
If you have any negative feelings towards someone who is using good manners, just remember, they probably have no idea what good manners really are! That’s why it is so important to know how to be a good person – not only for yourself but also to the people around you.
